// The pedophile is trying to fight back.//

Keep in mind, I’ve been completely neutral to him, nice even, unless provoked (the touching the hip thing). I generally act like he’s not there unless a class is canceled, in which case I tell him and then I go away. I think that this is a really mature, nice, and tolerant way of me handling the fact that I’m the only person at the school (I assume) who knows that he’s a pedophile. If I had found out a few years ago, his life would be in ruins by this point—but I’m older now and realize that he was discovered, he’s been in jail, his life as been drastically altered—and while I don’t think that’s punishment enough, that’s the punishment the legal system decided upon, and it’s not my place to push things further.

So yeah, I’m being as cool as I can possibly be. But he’s feeling threatened, so he’s attempting to rebel against me.

In class today, we’re talking about nonverbal communication, and John raises his hand and he’s like, “America judges other societies based on our own ideals, but that isn’t always right. In many countries, children are married off at very young ages, and we need to respect that cultural right. It’s ignorant not to.”

Right out of the blue. And then he looks over at me to see my reaction.

Game on, motherfucker!

I raise my hand. “Not three-year-olds,” I say pointedly (since he had pornography of a three-year-old being raped, and this is public knowledge to anybody who can Google his name and open the news link about his trial). “And while the practice was put in place to organize and monitor marriages to increase birth rates, it was an inherent part of the rise of patriarchal societies. Most places with these practices now have access to modern influence, but children are still given away in marriages. I, personally, feel that the men in these relationships are getting a good deal: very young, naive, repressed virgins at their sexual beck and call. Forget religion and cultural history—that’s reason enough that the practice continues, because many men are sick bastards that exploit children for their personal sexual desires. Perhaps that’s why you emphasize with that aspect of those cultures, John.”

He walked out of the damn class.
